Art Furniture — Botanical Ink & Shibori Silk
Presented at Art Paris, the AfterClub Sophora armchair is the result of a creative collaboration between Tony Jouanneau and LACLAUX, reinterpreting the studio’s iconic AfterClub armchair through botanical colour, traditional textile craftsmanship and sculptural pleating.
Upholstered in Manuel Canovas silk, the piece features hand-painted botanical inks applied using the traditional Japanese Hikizome technique. Its sculptural silhouette is enhanced by intricate Shibori pleating, developed in collaboration with Japan’s Kunosen Factory.
The collaboration emerged from the 2024 Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris, where designer Chloé Nègre chaired the jury for the Métiers d’Art category. A shared sensitivity to materials, craftsmanship and contemporary design inspired this unique interpretation of the AfterClub armchair.
Blurring the boundaries between functional design and textile art, AfterClub Sophora celebrates the dialogue between ancestral techniques and contemporary creation.
