Collective Research — Mycelium, Hemp & Recycled Paper

Presented during Paris Design Week 2021, PAPIER MYCÈTE is a collective design project initiated by four residents of the Ateliers de Paris: Atelier Sumbiosis, Laureline de Leeuw, Cécile Canel and Jacques Averna.

Developed in collaboration with Procédés Chénel in Paris and Grown.Bio in the Netherlands, the project explores new possibilities for interior architecture by combining moulded hemp and mycelium composites with reclaimed technical paper.

Three traditional architectural elements — tiles, columns and cornices — are reinterpreted through an experimental approach to materials and decorative surfaces. Conceived as modular interventions, these elements explore multiple functions, from acoustic insulation and spatial partitioning to wall coverings and ornamental compositions.

Through unexpected combinations of textures, colours and graphic patterns, PAPIER MYCÈTE proposes alternative ways of shaping interior spaces. Reclaimed paper becomes a versatile medium for architectural expression, unfolding into frames, linear compositions and expansive decorative surfaces.

Bringing together bio-based materials, circular design and contemporary craftsmanship, the project explores new relationships between material innovation, ornament and interior architecture.
